The Fitzroy Pool on Alexandra Parade opened its 50-metre outdoor lanes to 420 lap swimmers on the morning of 6 July, the highest single-session count recorded at the venue since 2023.

Recent national figures showed recession risks receding, yet consumer caution lingers in household budgets. Residents in inner-north suburbs have shifted toward no-frills outdoor exercise that avoids monthly gym contracts and indoor crowding. Lap swimming fits that pattern because entry remains low and sessions can combine with nearby running routes such as the Tan Track.

Fitzroy Pool and Elwood rock pools

Fitzroy Pool sits at the corner of Napier Street and Alexandra Parade, with eight lanes marked for timed swimming from 6am weekdays. Swimmers share the space with a separate leisure area, yet dedicated lap periods run until 9am and again from 4pm. Further south, the rock shelf at Elwood Beach near Ormond Esplanade forms a series of natural pools roughly 25 metres across at low tide. Local swimmers complete repeat laps between the groynes, finishing with a short jog back along the beach path that links to the broader Yarra River trail network.

City of Melbourne data released in May 2026 recorded a 14 per cent rise in outdoor lap-swim permits issued for the January-to-June period compared with the same stretch in 2025. Adult day entry at Fitzroy Pool costs $8.20, while the Elwood foreshore remains free. Both sites open at sunrise, giving users roughly ninety minutes of usable daylight before work starts.

Practical steps for this week

Swimmers planning a session should confirm lane availability through the City of Melbourne website the night before, as maintenance windows can close one or two lanes without notice. Those combining a swim with the Tan Track can park near the Royal Botanic Gardens entrance on Birdwood Avenue and walk the remaining distance. Early arrivals at Elwood should check tide tables published by the Bureau of Meteorology, since higher water reduces the usable rock-pool length. Regulars advise bringing a towel and a simple dry robe, given July water temperatures hover near 16 degrees even in the heated Fitzroy lanes.
