Registrations for Melbourne high school athletics squads open this week for the 2026 spring season, with Athletics Victoria confirming entry lists for more than 80 secondary schools across the city.

The timing follows the close of winter interschool competitions and aligns with the return of school terms after the mid-year break, when parents and students typically seek outdoor activities that fit around study loads. Melbourne's athletics community has seen steady growth in youth participation since the 2024 Paris Olympics boosted interest in track events.

Local programs and entry points

Students in inner suburbs can sign up through the Victorian Secondary Schools Track and Field program run at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, while those in the north attend sessions coordinated by the Brunswick Athletics Club at the Clifton Hill track on Merri Creek. Both locations run introductory clinics on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons that feed directly into school teams.

Schools such as University High in Parkville and Mac.Robertson Girls' High in the city centre already list these venues on their sports calendars, with transport arranged from campus for after-school training.

Costs, dates and basic requirements

Athletics Victoria reports 6,200 secondary students competed in interschool events last spring, with registration fees set at $135 for the full season including insurance and entry to three carnivals. Families must complete an online form by 25 July and supply a current school enrolment letter plus a medical clearance dated no earlier than 1 June.

New participants need only running shoes, a school sports uniform and a water bottle to begin; spikes and throwing implements are supplied at training sites. The first club night at Lakeside Stadium is scheduled for 5 August, giving families three weeks to organise transport and confirm availability with school sports coordinators.
