Sponsored content policy

How The Daily Melbourne handles advertising and paid partnerships, and how we make sure you always know what you are reading.

The Daily Melbourne accepts advertising and sponsored content to fund independent local journalism for Melbourne. We are committed to making the commercial nature of any paid content unmistakably clear, consistent with the Australian Consumer Law and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) guidance on misleading and deceptive conduct.

Clear and prominent labelling

Any content that is paid for, or produced in partnership with a commercial partner, is clearly labelled with terms such as “Sponsored”, “Advertisement”, “Paid partnership” or “Presented by [partner]”. The label appears at the top of the content, in plain language, so it is visible before you start reading. We never disguise advertising as independent editorial.

Editorial independence

Our newsroom coverage is independent of our commercial relationships. Advertisers and sponsors do not get to approve, edit or influence our editorial reporting, and paying for advertising does not buy favourable news coverage or protection from scrutiny.

Truthful and substantiated claims

Sponsored content must be accurate and not misleading. Advertisers are responsible for ensuring claims about their products or services are truthful and can be substantiated. We reserve the right to decline or remove content that we believe is misleading, deceptive or in breach of the Australian Consumer Law.

Affiliate links and commissions

Where we use affiliate links and may earn a commission on purchases, we disclose this. A commercial relationship never changes our editorial assessment of a product, business or service.

What we will not publish

We do not accept sponsored content for products or services that are unlawful, or that we consider harmful or misleading to Melbourne readers. We decline political advertising that is not properly authorised, and any content that would breach our editorial standards.

Questions and complaints

If you believe a piece of content is not properly labelled, or you have a concern about advertising on The Daily Melbourne, please contact us via our contact page. We take labelling complaints seriously and will correct any oversight promptly.
