Melbourne City Council expanded its free mental health drop-in hours at three sites this month to meet rising demand from residents along the Yarra River corridor.

July 2026 marks the sixth straight month of elevated calls to local helplines after winter weather cut outdoor activity on the Tan Track. The council’s 2025 annual report recorded 18,400 visits to free counselling sessions, a 14 percent jump from the prior year. Many users combined those sessions with daily runs along the river trails between Princes Bridge and Herring Island.

Named sites in Fitzroy and Collingwood

The Fitzroy Community Health Centre on Napier Street offers 45-minute walk-in sessions every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Staff there direct people to the nearby Collingwood Youth Centre on Hoddle Street for evening group programs that focus on breathing techniques and short stress audits. Both locations accept same-day bookings through the council’s online portal or by calling 03 9658 9658 before 4 pm.

Pilates studios in the same neighbourhoods now host free 20-minute mindfulness add-ons funded by a state grant that runs until December. Participants at studios on Smith Street and Wellington Street receive a printed card listing the next available council session times. No referral is required, and the card works as a ticket for priority entry at the Napier Street site.

Numbers and next steps

A June 2026 Victorian Department of Health snapshot showed that 62 percent of callers to the council line secured an appointment within 48 hours when they mentioned the Tan Track or river trails as their main stress outlet. The same report listed 2,150 first-time users from Fitzroy and Collingwood postcodes between January and May.

Residents start by texting “MENTAL” to 0488 777 123 to receive the current week’s timetable. Those who prefer in-person contact can visit the information desk inside Federation Square on any weekday morning. Staff there print a same-day referral slip that lists the nearest free slot and the exact street address. Follow-up texts confirm the booking and include a map link to the chosen clinic.
