Weekend Getaways from Melbourne: Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Great Ocean Road
Melbourne offers some of Australia's best regional day-trip and weekend-getaway options within 2-3 hours of the CBD, covering wine regions, coastal beaches and dramatic ocean scenery. The Yarra Valley, 75 minutes east via the Maroondah Highway, is Victoria's most established wine region with cellar doors including Domaine Chandon, Innocent Bystander and TarraWarra Estate, plus Healesville Sanctuary for Australian wildlife encounters. The Mornington Peninsula, 90 minutes south via the Nepean Highway, has a thriving wine region around Red Hill and Merricks alongside ocean beaches at Portsea, Sorrento and Rye and the hot springs complex at Peninsula Hot Springs near Fingal. The Great Ocean Road, starting at Torquay 90 minutes southwest, passes the Twelve Apostles limestone stacks at Port Campbell and offers some of the world's most spectacular coastal road scenery. Ballarat (90 minutes northwest) provides Victoria's most complete goldfields heritage experience at Sovereign Hill, while the Dandenong Ranges (40 minutes east) offer walking tracks through mountain ash forest and the Puffing Billy steam railway.
